What a read is, and what your app will spend
An allowance is only useful if you can tell whether it fits you. The meter has two entries, and the arithmetic below follows from them.
A read is one of two calls
GET /v1/eventsOne area query — the events live in a disc, right now.
GET /v1/streamOne subscription opened. Everything that then arrives on it is free.
Publishing an event, and confirming or denying somebody else’s, are never metered. So the invoice says the same thing the engineering does: subscribe once and listen, rather than ask again every thirty seconds.

Arithmetic on the two calls above, not a measurement. Your own figures are counted from your first request and shown in the console per day — size the plan on those, not on ours.
Questions people ask before they sign up

- What counts as a read?
- One area query, or one stream connection opened. Events arriving on a stream that is already open are not counted, and publishing an event or confirming somebody else's is never counted.
- Is publishing really free?
- Yes — on every plan, with no ceiling and no rate limit designed to make it awkward. Consuming the network is the product; publishing is what makes it worth consuming.
- Do I need a card to start?
- No. You sign in with a code sent to your email, and Stripe only sees a card when you subscribe to a paid plan.
- What does the sandbox cost?
- Nothing, on any plan, and sandbox keys are not counted against your key allowance. A sandbox key also reads live national traffic, so it is never an empty network to test against.
- How is VAT handled?
- Prices exclude tax. Stripe calculates VAT at checkout, and an EU business that enters its VAT number is zero-rated.
- How do I change plan or cancel?
- From the console, in the Stripe customer portal — which is also where your invoices and payment method live. Stripe prorates a change of plan.
- What does Enterprise change?
- Read volume set by contract instead of a tier ceiling, an SLA, and a named contact. Write to us and we will size it with you.
